When ever I open my email I see atleast one question on interstitial lung disease. I am glad that there is a significant increase in awareness about the disease. Unfortunately awareness alone can not cure this disease. This disease interstitial lung disease is a progressive disease that can only be controlled. All the medications like the corticosteroids, bronchodilators, anti-inflammatory drugs, mucolytics are only aimed at retarding the disease process and not reversing or curing the disease.

People ask me if there are any surgical options. Yes one can try a lung transplantation as one of the options provided many conditions are satisfied. Most of the surgeons are not very keen about lung transplantation as the results are not as rewarding as in COPD or cystic bronchiectasis.

My advise and opinion about this illness is now that many are getting to know about the disease they should find out ways and means to get to prevent this disease.Interstitial lung disease can be secondary to a systemic illness. This can also be caused by some drugs or dusts. They cause inflammation and scarring in the lungs that are permanent. Lung contains small sacs called alveoli that get thickened in ILD and the tissue surrounding it also gets thickened and scarred causing permanent damage. Quitting smoking can prevent ILD from worsening. In other words prevention is better than thinking of cure. Respiratory disease is a silent killer unlike heart disease which makes a big noise and is treatable disease too by surgical means. There are no satisfactory and fool proof surgical methods to cure this disease.

Another very good option to slow down or retard this disease is use of oxygen. This method unfortunately is not liked by many. Many think resort to oxygen is last step or a step before. Contrary to this belief I must add nocturnal oxygen supplementation is one of the best methods of improving quality of life if started early.

All the below information is being shared from personal experience within the family.

ILD; (pulmonary fibrosis) is such a disease which was difficult to detect at the very onset as the only symptoms were dry cough and was thus given incorrect treatment for quite a few years.

Doctors say that there is no cure for this disease but it can only be prolonged. The only permanent cure is a Lung Transplant in which also there is 10 % risk involved. But if transplant can be considered as an option, then it should be done so at the earliest. In our case, we were not aware about lung transplants happening in Chennai till recently and it was too late as ventilation was already administered for our mother as Co2 levels had shot up considerably.
There are lung transplants going on in India in the following hospitals :
    1. Apollo Hospital, Ayanambakkam, Chennai
    PH- 91 44 26537777
Dr N Madhu Sankar is the surgeon
    2. Global Health City ,Chennai
    91 44 22777000
Dr Govini Balasubramani is the surgeon
    3.Yashoda HospitalsSecunderabad, Andhra Pradesh
    91 40 27713333
Dr AGK Gokhale is the surgeon

Those people in the earliest phases of ILD can also try daily pranayam together with Sujok therapy as well; along with other medications; as this greatly helped to increase oxygen saturation in our case and she could reduce the external oxygen intake coming through the oxygen machine. There is a pro bono doctor in Faridabad (Delhi) rendering selfless service for Sujok –
Dr. Ramesh Narula, Sec 22, Faridabad
    Ph. : 91 9213188501

For further information on any of the above, pls. mail at –
(Lastly, at our individual level, we need to forgive everyone, have gratitude and stay positive.. This may seem out of context here, but has its own latent importance..)

  • Ram Bala  November 16, 2013 at 12:13 am

My Mother is diagnosed with ILD with Super added infection.. Doctors prescribed steroids as the only medication with Oxygen support as levels are below saturation… 89..and is dropping if mask is removed for a minute. that means continuous oxygen is required.. also every night on NIV ventilator.

Doctors were also saying Auto Immune disorder is the reason for ILD ..
giving steriods for that too.. i am too concerned about side effects and they have agreed to reduce dosage.

Request to throw some light on lung transplantation..please help…

    • Prakash J. Lakhapate  October 1, 2014 at 6:28 pm

      Dear Ram Bala,

The ILD disease can be easily controlled by using Ayurvedic Medicines , Pranayam , Yogasana and Proper diet
Pls send me all the reports at , M-91-9867069587

Lung Transpalantation is successful in U.K. but it is very expensive and also Lung donar is required.

Instead use StemCell Technology along with Ayurvedic Treatment and patient can be fully recovered.

      See website,

      Dhanyavad !!!

  • Priya  March 18, 2014 at 8:02 am

My mother-in-law is diagnosed with ILD of NSIP pattern. Please suggest if it is curable or not and the ways to treat or cure it.

    • Prakash J. Lakhapate  October 1, 2014 at 6:04 pm

      Dear Priya ,

By Ayurvedic Medicine , Pranayam, Yogasana and proper diet lung Fibros can be controlled. It takes lot of time to recover the damaged portion of lung.

For Lung Transplant (now successful in U.K) require a donar.

However Stem Cell Technology is useful for total cure , it also takes some time Hence Ayurvedic Treatment and Stem Cell Technology together can cure this faster

Emprocell Clinical Research PvT Limited has cured one patient in last 9 months See website and link

Send me background details of patient at
      M-91-9867069587 for free guidance

  • Nishant  June 26, 2014 at 4:20 am

Thank you Doctor for taking the time out to address the affected population.
Its always sad to hear “no cause…no cure” of this dreaded disease, our only option is oxygen therapy, breathing exercise, gargling, yoga, art of living and medicines.
I have my mother who is very ill and has scelrosis with ild, twice within this year she has been admitted to icu, once when she was breathlessness and second when she developed some infection.
in both the cases she came out back home and using the below:
    Oxygen therapy
    Breathing exercise

I know that these are immunosuppressive and as well strong medications unfortunately thats all what we can do.
I have done some research wherein people use cow urine or herbs to improve lung condition, there are reports that people actually got cured from ild in scelroderma but thats obvious it can only be a miracle as data suggested 1 in 10000.

My only question is can we really improve the lifespan of a patient, it doesnt matter amount of money spent or medication used or therapies conducted. What really matters is the lifespan, so that these patients can actually live their full life. There are reports and data on internet that does say that cure is near but not guaranteed.
At this point I would also like to add a story of a patient who was from Germany and had Aids and also suffered from some cancer during treatment for which he underwent bone marrow operation which actually resulted in his cancer and aids as a bliss diminished from his body.
My question here is (im not a doctor but a son who wants good for his mother) can some sort of surgery of such kind be possible as healthy red blood cell or white blood cell or maybe anything from a healthy person if infused can slowly diminish this fibrosis?
